John Butler Trio
October 6, 2004 - Detroit, MI
NL- So, who influenced you to play the guitar and how old were you when you got started?
John (lead vocals, guitar)- My grandfather, my parents, and Jimmy Hendrix. I was 16 when I started playing.
NL- How do you feel about your last record outselling the Vines, Pixies, and Jet in Australia?
John- Very proud and psyched, although I wasn't wanting to be competitive. I just want people to enjoy what their listening to.
NL- Are you excited for your U.S. debut (and also your Lava Records debut) this February?
John- Yes!!! Excited to share my music with as many people as possible.
NL- What musician would you compare yourself to here in the United States?
John- Led Zeppelin, Tracey Chapman, and Ani Difranco. Ani's the most amazing and biggest independent artist in America.
NL- Tell me about the Trio and how you formed?
John- On the base there's Shannon and on the drums you have Michael. My brother-n-law introduced me to them and from then on, we just cliqued.
NL- Describe your self in three words?
John- Nice but unfriendly.
NL- How did you meet your wife? I'm a sucker for love stories.
John- She actually asked me for directions once; than I ran into her after a gig and we just hit it off. I thought I must be so attracted to her because she smells like Heaven.
NL- Did you ever pursue a college education?
John- Well, I was born in California then moved to Australia because of my Father. I then attended one year at Curtin University in Western Australia. I was going to be an art teacher although writing papers about color relationships was just not my style.I'd rather be playing music on the streets. So I quit College and went with my passion.
NL- What advice would you give future college students today?
John- After attending 12 years of High School take a break from college, just for one year. Everyone needs to enjoy a Break.
NL- Thanks and good luck.
